Jimmy Savile was branded a "predatory sex offender" by a senior policeman today as cops revealed they were pursuing 120 separate lines of inquiry against the disgraced star.

Scotland Yard detectives said TV legend Savile's pattern of offending behaviour was on "a national scale".

Commander of specialist crime investigations Peter Spindler said police had recorded eight allegations against Savile, including two rapes.

He added the alleged victims were mainly girls who were aged between 13 and 16 at the time.

Tonight Savile’s family said they are to remove his headstone from his grave in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

In a statement they said: “The family members are deeply aware of the impact that the stone remaining there could have on the dignity and sanctity of the cemetery.

“Out of respect to public opinion, to those who are buried there, and to those who tend their graves and visit there, we have decided to remove it.”
