Police shoot sales girl dead, injure 3 others

A 20-year old sales girl identified simply as Lucy, was on Friday shot dead by policemen in the Apo area of Abuja.

The girl was hit in the chest by bullets fired into a photography shop where she worked as a sales girl.

Three other people sustained gunshot injuries when policemen from the FCT Police Command fired bullets indiscriminately in an attempt to enforce the demolition order of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council.

The policemen had stormed the area around 7 am with officials of Development Control Department, who had come to demolish illegal structures.

Tina Okpara, the teenage girl who was serially raped by Super Eagles star, Godwin Okpara, has released a book, detailing how the sexual assault went on for two years.

In the book titled, “My Life Has A Price”, the victim narrates how she was adopted at age 13 by the Okparas and taken to France. Linda, Okpara’s wife, then enslaved her for five years and turned a blind eye to the sexual abuse, she says in the book.

Tina’s decision to write the book seven years after she regained freedom, aims at raising awareness and helping other girls who might be going through the same horrendous experience, she said in an interview.

“One day, I told myself that if I refused testifying, other girls will continue to experience modern slavery,” she said.

She explained how her biological father was tricked by the Okparas into believing that she would be sent to school in France where the Super Eagles star was playing for Paris Saint Germain.

However, once in France, she was used as a sex slave. She was also prevented by Linda from attending school.

“The day she spat it on my face that schooling was not for me because I was too stupid, I lost all hope,” she said.

As the abuse worsened, Tina kept secret notebooks where she could “dump all my sorrow”.

“These notebooks were used to dump all my sorrow, all my hatred for Linda. It was my lifeline and my friend,” she said.

The 188-page book, originally written in French, has just been translated into English. Godwin is currently serving a 10-year jail term in France, while his wife, Linda, will be in jail for 15 years.

Cops find heroin, cannabis and loaded gun

STAR rapper Nelly was detained near the Mexico border after cops uncovered a loaded gun and drugs stash on his tour bus.

US checkpoint officers found dozens of sachets of heroin and a duffel bag containing over 4.5kg of cannabis during a routine stop on Wednesday evening in Sierra Blanca, Texas.

Shockingly, a loaded .45 calibre pistol was also discovered amongst the drugs.

But police eventually released the Grammy-winning rapper and arrested one of his seven-strong entourage, who took responsibility for the items.

120-year-old woman rescued in Bayelsa

Mrs. Rhoda Tamunu, an elderly woman, whose age is put at 120 years, has been rescued from a submerged house in Bayelsa State.

Tamunu was rescued by the state Emergency Medical Services at Agudama in Yenagoa, the state’s capital on Wednesday.

Barbosa made first black head of Brazil's Supreme Court

The judge overseeing a major corruption trial in Brazil has been appointed president of the Supreme Court, the first black person to hold the post.

Judge Joaquim Barbosa, who was born into a poor family, has been praised for his judicial independence.

He will take over the post once the "Mensalao" corruption trial ends.

Brazil has the largest black population after Nigeria. Many are descended from African slaves, but black people rarely achieve high office.

Mr Barbosa, 58, was elected by his fellow judges, following the Court's tradition of nominating its most senior member.
